Luxury Golf Itinerary Cartagena — Multi-Day Stay-and-Play on the Caribbean Coast

A multi-day golf itinerary in Cartagena pairs Caribbean-coast championship golf with the UNESCO-listed walled city — one of the most distinctive stay-and-play combinations in Latin America. Below: how the standard 4–7 day Pelecanus Cartagena itinerary is structured, the three accommodation patterns we use, and what the rest of the trip looks like around the golf.

Cartagena walled city — luxury golf stay-and-play base

Three Accommodation Patterns

Cartagena gives a golfer three meaningfully different bases. We build the itinerary around whichever fits the trip’s priority — cultural immersion, golf-resort comfort, or beachfront seclusion.

Pattern 1: Boutique walled city hotels

The classic luxury Cartagena base. Restored colonial mansions inside the walled city, 30–60 rooms per property, central courtyards with plunge pools, rooftop bars, and walking access to the entire UNESCO old town. For golfers, the daily rhythm is: morning transfer to course (20–40 min), back in the walled city for late lunch and the rest of the afternoon, evening at a Getsemaní or San Diego restaurant. Best fit for travellers whose trip is about Cartagena first, golf second — or who want their non-golfing partner to have something extraordinary to do every day.

Pattern 2: Karibana on-site accommodation

Stay at the Karibana resort — oceanfront residences and condominium-style accommodation overlooking the Nicklaus course. Best fit for golf-priority trips: rolling out of bed onto the practice range, multiple rounds at the same course without daily transfers, and a US-style golf-resort daily rhythm. Trade-off is distance from the walled city (30–40 min each way), so cultural Cartagena becomes a planned day trip rather than the evening default.

Pattern 3: Barú beach hotels

The Barú peninsula southwest of Cartagena offers beachfront resort and boutique hotels — quieter than the walled city, more isolated than Karibana. Best fit for combined golf + beach + rest itineraries, where two or three rounds are interleaved with full beach days and possibly a Rosario Islands excursion. Furthest from the courses (around 90 minutes to Karibana from northern Barú), so the golf days are bigger operational lifts — usually structured as 2–3 golf days clustered in the middle of the trip rather than evenly distributed.

Sample 5-Day Itinerary — Walled City Base

Day 1 — Arrival

Arrival at Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG). Private transfer to boutique hotel in the walled city. Afternoon at leisure or guided walled city orientation walk. Evening dinner in Getsemaní.

Day 2 — Karibana

Morning round at Karibana Beach Golf. Nicklaus design, oceanfront exposure, carts with GPS. Lunch at the clubhouse, back to walled city by mid-afternoon. Free evening — rooftop bar or San Diego dinner.

Day 3 — Rest day or Rosario Islands

Rosario Islands day trip (private boat charter), or a slower walled city day with optional cooking class, Castillo de San Felipe visit, and Café del Mar sunset.

Day 4 — Club Campestre de Cartagena

Round at Club Campestre de Cartagena. Mature parkland setting closer to the walled city — the traditional country-club experience. Caddies and carts available. Afternoon free, evening farewell dinner.

Day 5 — Departure

Morning at leisure. Transfer to airport.

Extending the Trip: Barranquilla Day

Adding Lagos de Caujaral in Barranquilla extends the itinerary by one full day — two-hour drive each way. Worth it for the Joe Lee design and the famous Island Green 6th hole, particularly if the trip prioritizes course variety. We coordinate the return-trip transfer and timing so the day works without sacrificing walled city evening time.

What’s Included

  • Hotel accommodation (walled city boutique, Karibana on-site, or Barú beach)

  • Walled city orientation and dining recommendations
  • Optional add-ons: Rosario Islands charter, cooking class, sunset sail, Castillo guided tour

Best Time to Travel

December–April is Cartagena’s peak season — dry weather, lower humidity, slightly cooler nights. May–November has shorter afternoon showers (typical Caribbean pattern) but mornings are usually clear and prime golfing conditions. Hotel pricing is significantly lower outside the December–March peak.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds should I plan for a 5-day Cartagena trip?

2–3 rounds is the typical pattern. Karibana + Club Campestre is the standard pairing; adding Lagos de Caujaral (Barranquilla) makes it three rounds with a longer travel day. More than 3 rounds in 5 days starts to crowd out the walled city, which is part of what makes Cartagena distinctive.

Walled city or Karibana — which is better?

If the trip is about Cartagena and golf is part of it: walled city boutique hotel. If the trip is primarily about golf and you want multiple rounds at one championship course: Karibana on-site. Travelling with a non-golfer partner usually tips the decision toward the walled city.

Is Barú a good base if we want beach time?

Yes — for a beach-priority itinerary with 2–3 rounds of golf, Barú works well. We cluster the golf days in the middle of the trip and frame the beach time around them so transfer time is minimized.

Can we combine Cartagena with another Colombian golf destination?

Yes — common pairings are Cartagena + Bogotá (high-altitude championship courses), Cartagena + Medellín (Club Campestre Llanogrande), or Cartagena + Coffee Triangle (Club Campestre de Pereira, with capybaras on the course). Domestic flights are short and we handle internal logistics end to end.

How far in advance should we book?

For December–March peak season: 3–4 months in advance is comfortable; 6 months gives the best hotel selection. Outside peak season, 6–8 weeks is usually enough lead time.
