Transfers between the walled city, Karibana, Club Campestre de Cartagena, Barú, and Rafael Núñez International Airport are part of every Pelecanus golf trip in Cartagena. Below: vehicle options, typical drive times, and the regional logistics that determine how an itinerary is structured.
Drive Times from the Walled City
- Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) — 15–20 minutes
- Club Campestre de Cartagena — 20–25 minutes
- Karibana Beach Golf — 30–40 minutes (Manzanillo del Mar)
- Barú beach hotels — 60–90 minutes (depending on hotel location on the peninsula)
- Lagos de Caujaral (Barranquilla) — 2 hours (autopista)
Times above are typical daytime drive times. Friday afternoons, public holidays, and the December–January peak weeks can extend the Barú and Barranquilla times by 30–60 minutes.
Vehicle Options
Private sedan (1–3 passengers)
Air-conditioned sedan with English-speaking driver. Standard for single travellers and couples. Sufficient luggage space for two players with golf bags using the trunk plus rear seat.
SUV / Premium SUV (3–5 passengers)
For foursomes and couples travelling with golf bags. Premium SUV upgrade available for clients who want a more comfortable cabin on the longer Barú or Barranquilla transfers.
Van / Minibus (6–14 passengers)
For corporate groups, scrambles, and tournament-scale events. Van transfers are coordinated so each foursome travels together — the day’s pairings start on the way to the course.
Coach (15–40 passengers)
For tournament-scale events with large player counts. Bottled water and air-conditioning standard. We coordinate boarding times to match the shotgun-start window at the host course.
Helicopter Transfers
Helicopter transfers between Cartagena and points along the Caribbean coast are available on request. This is not the default option for most itineraries — ground transfers between the walled city and the Cartagena-area courses are short enough that ground transport is the more practical choice. Where helicopter makes sense is for the Barranquilla-Lagos de Caujaral leg, or for clients with very tight schedules who want to compress travel time on a multi-day itinerary. We scope availability, route, and pricing on a case-by-case basis — please ask in advance.
Bag Handling & Equipment
- Airport meet-and-greet — driver waits inside the arrivals hall with name placard; bag handling from baggage claim to vehicle included
- Golf bag transport — bags ride with the player; for sedans, one set of clubs in the trunk + the second set across the back seat is standard
- Hotel-to-course rhythm — bags collected from hotel reception by driver, returned to room after the round (or held for departure on the final day)
Multi-Day Logistics
For multi-day itineraries we map transfer times into the daily plan so they don’t eat into walled city evenings or course time. A typical golf day:
- 06:30 — pickup from walled city hotel
- 07:00–07:15 — arrival at course, range warm-up
- 07:45 — tee off (early to beat heat and afternoon thermal winds)
- ~12:00 — round ends, clubhouse lunch
- 13:30–14:00 — back at hotel, afternoon free
The early-start rhythm matters in Cartagena: Caribbean coast afternoons are hot and humid, and the trade winds typically pick up after 14:00. Morning rounds are the more pleasant experience and we structure transfers around that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rent a car and drive myself?
Technically yes, but we don’t recommend it. Cartagena traffic, walled city access restrictions, and the route to Karibana through Manzanillo del Mar are easier with a driver who knows them. The cost of a private transfer is comparable to rental + parking + fuel and the experience is meaningfully better.
Is the helicopter option realistic or just on-paper?
It’s real, but it’s aspirational rather than standard — we arrange it on request, route by route, and confirm operator availability before pricing it. For most Cartagena-area itineraries the ground transfer is the right call; helicopter starts to make practical sense on the Cartagena-Barranquilla leg or for very compressed multi-stop schedules.
What about the drive to Barú?
The Barú peninsula is reached via the Pasacaballos ferry or, more recently, the Barú bridge. Transfer time depends on hotel location within Barú — northern Barú hotels are 60 minutes from the walled city, southern Barú (Playa Blanca and beyond) closer to 90 minutes. We factor the drive into golf day scheduling.
Will the driver wait at the course?
For most itineraries yes — the driver waits at the clubhouse, has lunch, and is ready to return when the round ends. For multi-foursome groups we coordinate return timing so players who finish early aren’t stuck waiting for the last group.
Does the airport transfer cover golf bag oversize?
Yes — vehicle is sized to the booking, including golf travel cases. We confirm bag count and case dimensions before assigning a vehicle for arrival.
